As we run multiple research projects on a large range of animal species, so cross-cutting conservation, management and research themes emerge. The first such theme we are exploring is Poison. Read more about it below.
Our planet is experiencing a dramatic decline in insects and wildlife, with over a million plants and animals facing extinction. This has been linked to pesticides as well as changes in land and sea use, pollution and climate change.
iCWild's focus on poison
The use of poison against ‘pest’ species is of central concern for iCWild as it poses dangers to people, wildlife and the environment. Although we don’t have a project dedicated to research on poisons, it’s through the many projects we have on multiple animal species that the pervasiveness of poisons in South African ecosystems has become evident.
There is a clear need for society to find better ways of dealing with pests – be they insects, rodents or carnivores – than poisoning them. But this is easier said than done as prevention often requires a coordinated response and additional resources.
